Camberley Judo Club has made a great start to the competition season in 2011. Last weekend members of the elite team competed in the under 20 and senior British trials which took place in Sheffield.

As well as being the national championships the tournament is used to select the British Junior and Senior squads for 2011.For the seniors especially this is an important event with the London 2012 Olympics being only 18 months away.

The under 20’s team got Camberley off to a fantastic start with a silver medal to Lasha Lekishvili and bronze medals to Sam Hughes and Jessica Black.

Lekishvili who put in an outstanding performance in all his contests throughout the day was unlucky in the final to narrowly miss out on becoming British Champion on a small score.

On the Sunday Camberley dominated the event with the club taking over a third of the gold medals.

Gold’s and British Champion titles went to Craig Fallon u66kg, Daniel Williams u73kg, Tom Davis u81kg (Willesden), Matthew Clempner +100kg and Karina Bryant in the +78kg category.

Karina Bryant proved she was still the one to beat in the over 78kg women’s category by beating all her opponents by maximum points. The 2011 national title sits nicely alongside Bryant’s 2010 European bronze and 2009 World silver medals. The Camberley star has now won a record twenty medals in major events.

Craig Fallon who is a former World and European champion is returning to the sport after some time out. Fallon progressed through the first round with ease beating all his opponents by maximum points. In the Final he came up against fellow Camberley Judo club player and training partner Nathon Burns. A close fight from the two Camberley players resulted in an Ippon win to Fallon and a well deserved Silver to Burns.

Tom Davis won all but one of his contests with the maximum score to take his second senior national title. Danny Williams won his first British title with a gutsy performance that’s saw two of his fights go into golden score extra time. Matt Clempner dominated the big men in the plus 100kg division and was not troubled all day.

Silver medals went to Nathon Burns (as mentioned above) and Josh Butler. Bronze medals going to Lee Shinkin (Willesden), Rebecca Dunning and Jessica Black. This was an extra special achievement from Jess as she is still a junior for another two years.

These medals have secured places for all players on the British Judo team for 2011.
